On Friday, July 31, the Norland Post Office in the
city of Miami Gardens was officially named for Canon Barry. Fr. Barry has
served the Miami community for many years, most recently as the rector of The
Historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church in the Overtown area of Miami. Perhaps most
significant of his community service is his dedication to brining people
together and bridging the many divides of Miamians. Canon Barry has served the
Episcopal Church for 39 years.
In thanking the crowd for their support, Canon. Barry
reflected on the shoulders on which he stands. “Lives of great men all remind
us we can make our lives sublime, and departing, leave behind us footprints on
the sands of time. I’m hoping that Ive left some footprints that my two
grandsons can step in,” remarked Canon Barry. Both grandsons were present for
the ceremony.
Also of note in attendance were many elected
officials including the mayors of the cities of Miami-Dade, Miami Gardens and
Opa-Locka, city council persons, the Postmaster General of Miami and the chief
of staff for the Honorable Frederica S. Wilson, U.S. Representative of the 24th
Congressional District, who was responsible for introducing the legislation to
dedicate the facility to Canon Barry.
